Pipe plugs come either with parallel threads or tapered threads. Pipe plugs with parallel threads will have a shoulder and will be used with a seal ring or gasket. Sealing compound or tape is used to create the seal for Pipe Plugs with tapered threads.
When pipe threads are needed in the metric world the British pipe sizes are very commonly used. There is British Standard Pipe Parallel (BSPP or type G) and British Standard Pipe Tapered (BSPT or type R).
